| »cash
drive« shows, with the use of three video beamers on an oversized
screen, a projected film
sequence of the artist (himself) unsuccessfully, alone through physical
strength, attempting to push a gold luxury limousine forwards. Not
until the observer throws the symbolic price of one Euro into the
paying apparatus of the installation, does he succeed in moving the
voluminous automobile from the spot. It doesn't take long though
for the car to yet again stall, and the artist is forced to hope
for another payment.

Jakub Moravek's final
project at the Academy of art in Munich - »standing ovation«, is
an entertaining study of man's
need to be the centre of attention. Whoever wants to, can also see
in it the 'Warholian' adage of fame for everyone for 15 minutes.
A wall-filling projected film sequence simulates scenes out of TV
shows. It shows several rows of sitting and standing people who look
at the observer from the screen. They appear to be studying the observer
concentratedly, however remain still, almost motionless. Only when
an installation visitor moves towards the projection wall, are sensors
triggered, that in turn cause the crowd slowly to move. If the visitor
reduces the distance again little by little, they start to look friendlier,
a few applaud. If the visitor finally stands directly in front of
the projection, the scene escalates to an ecstatic applause. Should
he leave the red carpet again, the applauding wanes. These scenes
can be played in any order whatsoever as the film has no linear plot. |

»station« is a piece of
work for the outdoors. The idea to take the nearest underground
station in it's original size and project it in the six arcadian
style windows on the ground floor of the literature house, developed
directly from the given architectural. A 30 minute film was created
without cuts or camera pans. It shows the platform of the underground,
giving an account of waiting people, the arrival and departure
of the tube and people getting on and off. Following from this,
there is an announcement, waiting people alight the tube, doors
close, and the tube drives off. Again the platform, waiting people....
The usual interpretations of area specifics follow either formal aesthetic
or social political criteria. Station combines the change of everyday rooms
through art, thus the aestheticizing of everyday life, with the amazing effect
of a translocation. Then although for the passenger in the station, the coming
and going of the tube is nothing more than a normal everyday situation, the
new surroundings change the familiar scene into a produced spectacle. |
